Rohit Sharma to Continue Playing ODIs, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia Confirms

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is not planning to retire from ODI cricket anytime soon, according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

Saikia addressed the speculation surrounding Rohit’s future after a review meeting at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday. He made it clear that there is currently no plan for the former India captain to step away from the ODI format.

Rohit has been under the spotlight in recent months, with questions being raised about how long he will continue playing international cricket. However, the latest comments from the BCCI suggest that the experienced opener remains part of India’s ODI plans.

BCCI Backs Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future

Rohit’s future was one of the topics discussed during the meeting. According to Saikia, there is no reason to believe that the 39-year-old batter is close to retirement.

The BCCI secretary pointed to Rohit’s recent performances and asked why there should be further speculation about his future when he is still producing important innings for India.

Rohit has already retired from Test and T20I cricket and now plays only ODIs for India. His focus has been on continuing in the 50-over format, with the 2027 ODI World Cup an important target.

The latest statement from Saikia indicates that India are still willing to use Rohit’s experience in the ODI team.

Ajit Agarkar Misses the BCCI Meeting

The meeting also attracted attention because chief selector Ajit Agarkar was not present.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir, ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and VVS Laxman attended the meeting. BCCI president Mithun Manhas and secretary Devajit Saikia were also present.

Saikia explained that Agarkar was outside Mumbai and could not join the meeting online because he was in an area without internet access.

His absence led to some speculation, particularly because Rohit’s future was expected to be discussed.

However, Saikia said there was no need to read too much into Agarkar’s absence.

BCCI Discusses Player Injuries and Workload

Player injuries were another important topic during the meeting.

Saikia linked some of the recent injury problems to the heavy workload faced by Indian cricketers. He pointed to the demanding schedule and the impact of playing a long Indian Premier League (IPL) season before international cricket.

India’s players have had to manage a packed calendar, and several members of the ODI squad suffered injuries during the England series.

The BCCI now wants to improve workload management and give players enough time to recover between major assignments.

More Focus on Recovery and Preparation

Saikia said the board is looking at ways to improve the process of returning players to competitive cricket after injuries.

The BCCI also wants future schedules to provide players with more rest and enough time to adjust to conditions before important overseas series.

Preparation matches before major series could also become part of the planning process.

The aim is to reduce injury risks and make sure India’s key players are available for important tournaments.

India Already Planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup

The BCCI has also started looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Saikia said the board has begun making plans for the next year and wants India to be in the best possible position when the World Cup arrives.

Rohit Sharma’s continued presence could be important because of his experience in ODI cricket and his leadership background.

For now, the message from the BCCI is clear: Rohit Sharma is expected to continue playing ODI cricket, and there is no immediate retirement plan.

His future will remain an important topic as India build their squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
