After the defeat in Guwahati, fans chant ‘Shame on Gambhir’, clash with police, while Siraj and Kotak defend the coach
India faced another embarrassing defeat on home soil. On Wednesday, they lost to South Africa in Guwahati. Fans could not accept this loss. After the match, many of them mocked Gautam Gambhir. Indian supporters even shouted “Go back!” at him. Mohammed Siraj and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stood beside the head coach and requested the crowd to stay calm.
After Wednesday’s match, the players and support staff were standing on the field for the prize-giving ceremony. At that moment, a section of the crowd in the Barsapara Stadium started shouting, “Gautam Gambhir hai hai” and “Gambhir go back.” Gambhir, the head coach of India, was standing very close, so he heard the chants clearly. Several Indian players also heard the noise and looked toward the stands.
Siraj then brought his finger to his lips, asking the crowd to be quiet. He did this several times. With hand gestures, he also asked them to lower their voices. Sitanshu Kotak was standing near the boundary line. He said, “The person who speaks so much for India—you are shouting against him?”
Earlier, the Test match in Kolkata ended within two and a half days because of a spinning pitch. Even though the Guwahati match lasted five days, the result was the same. After the recent loss to South Africa, following the defeat against New Zealand, supporters are unable to accept such failures. So Gambhir had to face a situation at home that he never imagined.
